The Fort Bragg sergeant charged in the death of a pregnant soldier was the father of her unborn baby but married to someone else police said Wednesday. July 30 14:34: 40NATS UP An army sergeant charged with in the death of a pregnant soldier made his first court appearance Wednesday. Edgar Patino is accused of killing Specialist Megan Touma, who was seven months pregnant. 13:17:54 SOT: patino is a soldier stationed at ft bragg, assigned to the jfk special warfare training center. The defendant is also the father of the unborn child. Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine Patino-- who is married to someone else-- reportedly admitted to fathering Toumas baby. And police say he also acknowledged that he was in Toumas Fayetteville North Carolina motel room June 13th. Thats the last day her hotel room key was used-- and where her body was found days later. Police also believe Patino wrote a letter to a local newspaper claiming to be a serial killer responsible for Toumas death. The letter featured a circle-and-cross drawing similar to the one used a generation ago by San Franciscos infamous Zodiac Killer.13:19:17SOT: a letter was received by the fayetteville observer which contained info on the toumas death. The staff contacted our detectives who collected the letter which proved to be vital during the investigation. Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine So far investigators havent released a motive or cause of Toumas death. The case made international headlines after she became the third servicewoman this year to be killed near a North Carolina military base. Army 2nd Lieutenant Holley Wimunc (Wy-muhk) was found dead in a wooded area near Camp Lejeune. Her estranged husband has been charged in her death. And the burned body of Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach (LAW-tur-bahk), who was eight months pregnant was discovered in a shallow grave near Camp Lejeune in January. Her former co-worker and a man she accused of rape was arrested in that case.
